Iron art Sculpture Wild Boar

Iron art Sculpture Wild Boar

This unique piece of iron sculpture was designed, forged and created by Heidi here at White Hart Forge. This fantastic Celtic Boar is made up of individually hand forged pieces one laid over the other to give a three dimensional perspective of action. Note the sharp tusks, the bristling hair and the hand forged spirals. The eyes are made from rivets of hard black steel. Also, the legs are articulated by using rivets to mount them to the body. This sculpture seems to leap out into the room! The color and patina were created by wire brushing the surface from scale, some light sanding. A light heat of around 500 degrees is applied to bring out the darker blues and violets in the polished steel. Then the piece is treated with a light bees' wax and Linseed oil mix under that same heat to provide a darkened luster. The entire piece measures almost 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide and weighs in at about 45 pounds. This is a very powerful piece of sculpture. It is for sale now directly from White Hart Forge at $2500.00

Mjolnir Thor\'s Hammer Thor with Troth Ring

Mjolnir Thor's Hammer Thor with Troth Ring

This hammer weighs approximately 13 pounds. The head is slit and drifted open in the traditional manner of the ancient smiths to form the eye for the handle. Both faces are then upset to provide a work surface and a shape reminiscent of the traditional northern European style hammers.
Mjolnir Thor\More Details

The handle will be made, traditionally, from oak, but if I'm out of that I may have some yew wood or maple. After the forging process the hammer is cleaned of scale and faced. Then under a black heat a linseed oil and bee's wax treatment is added for protection againts rust and to create a fine patina.

This is truly Mjolnir, hammer of Thor!!! If you are looking for a hammer for your ceremonies, for bl'o't, or just to place on the alter then here you have a mighty one.

This piece is hand forged in our Smithy using the same techniques as the old Norse Blacksmiths. I have made this style of large hammer in the past for ceremonial purposes and alter use. There is only one other like this. I am now in the process of making a second based on this original. It will include runes cut into the side similar to the ones shown but at your descretion. It will also include a similar handle and troth ring. However, because these are made one at a time and hand forged there will never be two alike.

In the book of Scandinavian Mythology by H.R. Ellis Davidson, can be found a photo of a small Thor's Hammer and ring found in Labby, Uppland, Sweden. According to Ellis Davidson, the cult of Thor was linked up with men's habitations and possessions, and with the well being of the family and the community. This included the fruitfulness of the fields, and Thor, although pictured primarily as a storm god in the myths, was also concerned with fertility and with the preservation of the seasonal round. Little stone axes and hammers used as fertility symbols were placed by the farmer in the holes made by the drill to receive the first seed of spring. Here we see Thor's marriage to Sif of the golden hair as the ancient symbol of divine marriage between the sky god and the earth goddess, when he comes to the earth as a thunderstorm bringing the rains and making the field fertile.

size = 2" tall by 1" wide by 1/4"thick

It was said by some authors that the torc was an ornament for women until the 4th century B.C.E., when it became an attribute of warriors. But most authors disagree, saying that it was a sign of nobility and high social status: a decoration awarded to warriors for their deeds in battle, as well as a divine attribute, since some depictions of Celtic gods wear one or more torcs. Images of the god Cernunnos wearing one torc around his neck, with torcs hanging from his antlers or held in his hand, have been found. Torcs have also been found in the tombs of Celtic princes.

Torcs were worn by various peoples from the Bronze Age, about 1000 B.C.E., until about 300 C.E, including the Galatians (or Anatolian Celts), various Germanic tribes the Scythians and the Persians. However, it is best known as the typically Celtic necklace worn especially by Britons, Gauls, and Iberians.

One of the earliest known depictions of a torc can be found on the Warrior of Hirschlanden, a statue of a nude ithyphallic warrior made of sandstone, the oldest known iron age life-size anthropomorphic statue north of the Alps. It was a production of the Hallstatt culture of the early Iron age (800-475 BC). It is now in the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart Depictions of the gods and goddesses of Celtic mythology frequently show them wearing torcs.

The famous Roman copy of the original Greek sculpture The Dying Gaul, depicts a wounded gladiator naked except for a torc. Examples have been discovered in Britain and Europe during archaeological surveys [1]. A notable and exquisite example was found at the Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo burial mound.

The Roman consul Titus Manlius once challenged a Gaul to single combat and killed him, and then took his torc. Because he always wore it, he received the nickname Torquatus (the one who wears a torc). After this, Romans adopted the torc as a decoration for distinguished soldiers and elite units during Republican times.
